My Melodia
Information
2023, Sculptural work made of vinyl records from Melodiya, barbell, 8 Original Melodia records + 4 drawings
Installation, sculpture, drawings
My Melody by Karabinovych turns Soviet vinyl records into sculpture. What first looks like a barbell is actually loaded with records from Melodiya, the USSR’s state label. Instead of playing music, these discs now carry weight, showing how ideology and memory can feel like a burden. The barbell becomes a metaphor: the past seems light until you lift it, and then its true heaviness appears.
On the walls, Karabinovych shows covers from Melodiya’s Music of Asia and Africa series, once used to promote the Soviet Union as progressive and anti-colonial power. Some sleeves he found intact; others were missing or too expensive, so he redrew them by hand in simple pencil lines. Originals and copies hang side by side, raising questions about propaganda, authenticity, and loss.
